Buying A Used Surfboard

If you’re an aspiring surfer or a seasoned wave rider, buying a used surfboard can be an excellent way to save money while still getting a high-quality board. However, it’s important to approach the process with caution and ensure that you make an informed decision.

Where to Buy

If you live in a coastal community, it is likely you have at least one or two surf shops. Surf shops are often a great place to buy used boards, and employees can answer questions and provide good insights on the quality of the board.
If you are comfortable with it, you can find the biggest selection of used surfboards online on peer-to-peer marketplaces. In San Diego, popular choices include OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, or Craigslist

What to look for

It is helpful to have a general idea of what type of board you are looking for (shortboard, longboard, fish, soft top, etc.). Vendors should describe the condition of the board well, but be wary of looking for dings. Dings that are repaired professionally might look like dark spots/blotches on the board.

Is the board made by a reputable surfboard shaper? Does the Seller have reviews and do they seem trustworthy? These are important questions to ask yourself and/or the vendor.

Pricing

Dings can instantly take sizable value off the board, but aren’t a problem in terms of functionality if they were repaired professionally and are watertight. It is a good idea whenever you find a used board you’re considering buying, go check the original price of the board bought brand new. Then take into consideration how much the board has been ridden, condition, and comparable boards on the market, and decide whether or not you think you’re getting a good deal.

Caution

Whenever buying anything online, be sure you are buying from a trustworthy seller, and consider meeting them in a public place.

Buying a used surfboard can be a fantastic way to enter the sport or expand your quiver without breaking the bank. By following the guidelines mentioned, you’ll be able to confidently navigate the used surfboard market.
