Where the Surf Meets the Turf at Del Mar
– Del Mar Horse Races (Opening Day) Bring your fancy hat and enjoy the races where the surf meets the turf at Del Mar. Thursday will mark the beginning of the 76th year of thoroughbred horse racing at the Del Mar Racetrack. The festivities will get underway at 11:30 a.m., when entries will be taken for the annual Opening Day Hats Contest, with over $5,000 in prizes up for grabs. 2015 will also see a new dirt track being installed for racing, replacing the synthetic surface that had previously been used for eight years. The dirt – known as El Segundo sand – is also the same material used at Santa Anita. The track has been run upon by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, who is in Del Mar to train for an August run in Monmouth Park but is not expected to participate in the 40-day Del Mar meet. The featured race on Opening Day will be the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes. https://www.dmtc.com/ – San Diego Surf School: Surf Camps, Surf Lessons, $55 group surf lessons, Sups and rentals Sun is out and the H2O temperature is on the 70s bring your friends to pacific beach or ocean beach and enjoy your surf lessons with the best surf instructors in the industry https://www.sandiegosurfingschool.com/ – HURRICANE DOLORES MOVING INTO THE SOCAL SWELL WINDOW – THURSDAY MORNING UPDATE: Although weakening a notch from yesterday’s category 4 status, Dolores continues to hold on as a cat 3 storm for the moment and now crossing into the SoCal swell window. http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/hurricane-dolores-slightly-weakens-south-of-cabo_129353/ – Lay Day at J-Bay: Heavyweight Heats on Deck: Another lay day has been called at the J-Bay Open, Stop No. 6 on the 2015 Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), with more promising conditions predicted for the weekend. http://www.worldsurfleague.com/posts/128810/lay-day-jeffreys
