One of the longest left-hand breaks in the world, Chicama, is now protected by Peruvian law.
WHAT DOES THAT PROTECTION MEAN?
According to Surfline, Chicama is the first of five Peruvian breaks to become part of the National Waves Registry bringing the total to 130. What that means is that it is now illegal to build anything up to one kilometer of the wave that may affect the way the wind or the wave behave.
Peru now stands out as a country that is concerned with wave protection in order to protect its sustainable surf industry.
