To an outsider, surfboards may seem like they’re all built for the same purpose. This could not be further from the truth. If you aim to ride different kinds of waves, you’ll need different types of boards.
If you’re a seasoned surfer, you know that all surfboards are not created equal. Just as there are different types of surf, there are different designs of boards to tackle those waves. A great surfing quiver contains various boards for every kind of surf and weather condition.
In this article, we’ll take you through four boards to add to your quiver. Sure you could add endless boards, but these four will cover you in most situations, so you never miss a wave.
The average surfer owns four boards. Does that fact have you thinking it’s time you add a new board to your collection? By the end of this read, you’ll know which board to grab for every type of wave you encounter.
FOUR BOARD TYPES TO ADD TO YOUR SURFING QUIVER
When building your quiver, you want to cover as many different weather conditions, surf types, and scenarios as possible. Whether you are just starting out or are looking to add some new boards to your collection, check out the most suggested kinds.
1. THE LONGBOARD
Longboards, or logs/cruizers, are 8-9′ long boards with rounded noses. These types of boards are easy to paddle, very stable in the water, and great for learning and catching waves.
If you are looking to hang fives or tens, tandem surf, perform drop-knee turns, or even cross step on the deck, then this is the board for you. However, if you are looking for short turns and airs, this isn’t your first choice.
2. THE FISH
The Fish surfboard is a shortboard with a much broader, rounder nose than it’s fellow boards. They are usually 5’2″-6’4″ in length and 18″-22″ in width.
This type of board is ideal for wave catching while simultaneously maintaining speed. It’s perfect for small-to medium-sized waves and is easy to maneuver. The Model by Ghetto Surf is a fun choice if you’re looking for a new board.
3. THE MALIBU
The Malibu board or ‘mini-mal’ is, in theory, a shorter, slimmer longboard that allows for sharp turns and higher maneuverability. These boards usually have one or three fins for stability.
These types of boards are very versatile and great for all kinds of conditions and waves. It is no wonder these are the world’s best selling surfboards.
4. THE GUN
Beginners beware! This is not the board for you. Gun surfboards are for massive waves. Often, these types of boards are for specific waves like Mavericks or Wiamea.
These boards are long, between 6’6″ and 10′ and thick enough to handle the pounding of a big wave. The narrow nose and tail allow the rails to contact the wave.

Summer is finally here. It’s time to grab your surfing quiver and hit the coast.
