No one has an accurate headcount when it comes to how many people qualify as surfers. But estimates put the worldwide number of surfers at around 30 million.
And it seems the overwhelming majority of surfers are men.
If you’re dating a surfer or married to one, you know they never wander far from the beach. How do you compromise when it comes to vacations?
Don’t fret! Some of the best places to surf are also great places to vacation, even for the non-surfer.

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
Go easy on your non-surfing partner and take them to San Diego, California. There are even some great surf spots for beginners if your partner wants to give it a go.
But if surfing isn’t on your partner’s mind, there are plenty of other activities. Rent bikes and cruise the boardwalk along Mission Beach. Ride the Mission Beach roller coaster.
Visit the tide pools at La Jolla Cove and check out the seals. There are great shops and restaurants all along the coastal cities of San Diego. Your partner won’t mind sunning while you’re surfing!
CABO SAN LUCAS
This spot is in Baja California Sur, a Mexican state on the Baja California Peninsula. It’s one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations and for a good reason. Cabo is known for its beautiful beaches and, of course, surfing.
But there’s also snorkeling and scuba diving. And your non-surfing partner will love a boat ride out to the famous arch.
There are plenty of resorts to choose from along the coast from San Jose del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas. And they all serve tequila and cerveza!
MALDIVES
The Maldives are paradise floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Made up of atolls, there’s some fabulous surf.
And how can your significant, non-surfing other complain about hanging out in paradise?
Make sure you’ve booked your accommodations ahead of time. Tourist regulations are strict, and you’ll need to be part of a tour.
BALI
If you’re a real surfer, you’ve got to make it to Bali at least once in your life. If you’re an experienced surfer, you’ll love the consistent waves of Padang Padang. Are you adventurous? You’ll enjoy the giant swells of the legendary Uluwatu.
Need some rest time? Take your partner to the monkey temples or stroll on the beach. Avoid renting a car and hire your driver. It’s about the same price, but safer and more relaxed.
COSTA RICA
There are plenty of surf spots in Tamarindo offering consistent swells year round. There are tons of other activities in Costa Rica for the non-surfer. From zip-lines to horseback riding, it won’t upset your partner that you’re out surfing all day.
Go in the spring or summer for the best swells and weather.
