Lessons On Life: What Surfing Teaches You About Life

For those that surf, the act can be more than just a sport or a pastime. It can be a way of life.

There’s nothing like the surge of a wave underneath your board. Your time out on the water can allow a break from reality, and give you a perspective you couldn’t obtain on land.

This new perspective has huge potential. There’s a lot of life lessons to be learned in the pursuit of the perfect wave. We’ll walk you through a few of them below.

FOCUS IS YOUR GREATEST TOOL

There’s no room for distractions when you’re out with your board on the water. To feel out the ocean and position yourself for the incoming current, your mind has to be completely in the moment.

Let your mind wander elsewhere, to the future or past, the wave is likely to pass you by.

In a world that’s moving faster than ever, it’s a reminder to not let ourselves get too distracted. Stimuli have the potential to overwhelm us, and more demands our attention than ever before in history.

It’s hard to succeed in life with all these distractions. But surfing is an amazing way to develop the ability to shut such things out when you need to.

PATIENCE PAYS OFF

There are multiple instances in your surfing life where patience becomes essential. Early on, when you’re learning how to even get on your board, your patience will be tested. Even once you’ve become proficient, much of your time on the water is waiting for a good wave to roll through.

There’s a reason most surfers are so laid-back: the practice has taught them the benefits of calm patience. Anxiety has no place out on the water. Just cool, calm, and measured patience.

If you can develop this skill when surfing, you’ll likely be able to employ it to other areas of your life, as well. Is traffic getting you down? Lean into your surfing training and find inner peace.

FIND YOUR BALANCE

All surfers have stories about their first few times out on their boards. You stand, you fall. You stand, you fall again. It can be difficult for newcomers to find the proper balance. It takes a certain sense of internal calibration, a listening to your body and the board beneath you.

Such a balance has to be found in everyday life as well. Learning to prioritize various aspects of life is a practice that takes time and openness. Lean too far in one direction and you’ll likely fall.

Even pro surfers wipe out from time to time. But surfing can help us remember to listen and adjust to the world around us. It teaches that a life balance is obtainable if we listen to our body and respond accordingly.
